ABOUT

Harvard Business School

Harvard Business School is a management-education and research institution whose mission is to educate leaders who make a difference in the world. Its influence extends beyond degree programmes through executive education, research, publishing, online learning, cases and a global alumni network. It is strategically significant as part of the infrastructure through which management ideas are created, debated and carried into organisations.

Its clearest pedagogical point of difference is the case method. Students confront a real decision with incomplete information, form a view, test it in discussion and reflect on the consequences. The classroom is participant-centred: varied experience becomes part of the learning system, and the faculty member structures inquiry rather than simply transmitting a single correct answer.

Research and teaching reinforce one another. Faculty relationships with organisations generate questions and cases; classroom debate exposes assumptions; publishing spreads frameworks and examples; and graduates apply and adapt the ideas in practice. The method also has limits: a compelling case can simplify causality, reward persuasive confidence or encourage lessons that travel poorly unless historical context and evidence are examined carefully.

OutcomesLab profiles Harvard Business School because of its outsized role in shaping the language and practice of strategy, leadership and general management. The school provides context for influential thinkers, theories and cases across the site. It is also useful for examining how institutions develop managerial judgement—and why strong management education should teach people to challenge a framework, not merely remember it.
