Eliyahu Goldratt

Eliyahu Goldratt was a physicist, author and management thinker who developed the Theory of Constraints. He used novels, simulations and logical tools to make systems thinking practical for managers, most famously through The Goal. His work began in manufacturing but expanded into projects, distribution, accounting, strategy and organisational change.

Goldratt’s central insight is that the performance of a system is limited by a small number of constraints. Improving non-constraints may create activity without increasing the result that matters. His focusing process therefore directs managers to identify the constraint, exploit it, subordinate other decisions to it, elevate it and then repeat as the constraint moves. Throughput, inventory and operating expense provide an alternative lens to local efficiency.

The broader contribution is a discipline of whole-system reasoning. Goldratt’s Thinking Processes ask what to change, what to change to and how to cause the change, helping leaders surface causal assumptions and conflicts. The approach is powerful but not automatic: managers can misidentify the constraint, define the system’s goal too narrowly or apply manufacturing language mechanically where human and political dynamics dominate.
