ABOUT

John Kotter

John Kotter is a Harvard professor, author and founder of Kotter whose career has focused on leadership and organisational transformation. His work became influential by identifying recurring reasons major change efforts lose momentum and by giving leaders a shared sequence for mobilising people beyond the mechanics of project management.

The eight-step process begins with urgency and a guiding coalition, then develops and communicates a change vision, enables broad action, generates short-term wins, sustains acceleration and embeds new behaviour. Later work reframed the sequence as iterative accelerators and proposed a dual operating system: a flexible network that mobilises change alongside the hierarchy that provides reliability and control.

Kotter’s distinction between management and leadership highlights different organisational needs. Management supports planning, budgeting and predictability; leadership creates direction, alignment and movement. The framework can become overly linear when used as a checklist, and manufactured urgency can exhaust people or suppress debate. Change also depends on local context, power, capability and system design that no generic sequence fully resolves.

OutcomesLab profiles Kotter because coherent strategy produces no result unless people understand, support and enact a different pattern of work. His ideas connect strategic direction with coalition building, communication, early evidence and institutionalisation. Used thoughtfully, the framework helps leaders diagnose where transformation has stalled while reminding them that sustainable change requires both the energy of a movement and the operating mechanisms that make new behaviour normal.
