Liz Wiseman
Ideas, influences and insights from a thinker shaping how organisations work.
Liz Wiseman
Liz Wiseman is a leadership researcher, author and executive adviser whose work examines how leaders affect the intelligence and contribution of people around them. Drawing on her experience at Oracle and subsequent research, she contrasts leaders who amplify capability with those who unintentionally suppress it.
In Multipliers, Wiseman describes leaders who attract talent, create intense but productive debate, extend meaningful challenges and give others ownership of results. Diminishers, by contrast, become bottlenecks by dominating ideas, rescuing people too quickly or assuming that intelligence is scarce. The concept of the accidental diminisher is especially practical because good intentions can still reduce initiative and judgement.
Her later work on rookie smarts and Impact Players explores learning advantage and the behaviours of people trusted with difficult work. The ideas should not be used to romanticise overload or excuse leaders from providing direction. Multiplying capability requires clear standards, context and appropriate support; constant stretch without resources or safety can simply transfer risk downwards.
OutcomesLab profiles Wiseman because strategic execution depends on how much usable capability leadership releases from the organisation. Her work connects talent, decision rights and team performance with everyday managerial behaviour. It also sharpens the resource question: before adding more people, leaders should examine whether the current system invites contribution or keeps intelligence concentrated at the top. Wiseman provides a practical theory of leadership leverage grounded in the performance of others.
