ABOUT

Procter & Gamble

Procter & Gamble is a global consumer goods company whose strategic significance lies less in any single brand than in the system connecting its portfolio choices, innovation capabilities, brand-building disciplines and operating model. P&G concentrates on daily-use categories in which product performance materially influences brand choice, giving it repeated opportunities to earn consumer preference through superior products and experiences.

Its central point of difference is an explicitly integrated growth strategy. P&G combines a focused portfolio with what it calls superiority across product performance, packaging, brand communication, retail execution and consumer and customer value. Productivity is treated as a source of investment capacity rather than simply a cost-reduction programme, while constructive disruption is intended to renew technologies, capabilities and ways of working. These choices are supported by an organisation designed to be empowered, agile and accountable.

The strategic logic is cumulative. Better productivity creates room to fund innovation and demand creation. Superior propositions strengthen brands and help grow categories. A focused portfolio directs resources towards areas where P&G believes its capabilities can matter most. The advantage therefore depends on the elements reinforcing one another; executing one or two in isolation would not produce the same result.

OutcomesLab profiles P&G because it is a useful example of strategy as a coherent system of choices rather than a list of initiatives. The company’s strategy work under A.G. Lafley, developed with Roger Martin, also helped shape the Playing to Win framework and its practical questions of where to play and how to win. P&G provides a valuable case for examining focus, capability-led advantage, resource allocation and the organisational mechanisms required to translate strategic intent into sustained performance.
