ABOUT

A.G. Lafley

A.G. Lafley is a former chairman, president and chief executive of Procter & Gamble whose work is closely associated with the company’s strategic renewal. His significance as a practitioner lies in making choices about portfolio, consumers, brands, innovation and capabilities while leading a complex global organisation through periods of growth and reinvention.

With Roger Martin, Lafley articulated strategy as an integrated cascade of choices: a winning aspiration, where to play, how to win, the capabilities required and the management systems that support them. The cascade challenges organisations to move beyond goals and initiatives. Each choice must fit the others, and the strategy becomes credible only when resources, activity and organisational design reinforce the intended advantage.

Lafley’s P&G experience also emphasised understanding the consumer as the boss, focusing the portfolio and opening innovation beyond internal laboratories. Yet the value of the case is not a formula that every company should copy. Consumer insight, scale and brand-building mattered because they suited P&G’s categories and capabilities; the same choices would not create advantage in every context.

OutcomesLab profiles Lafley because he provides a rare bridge between strategy theory and accountable enterprise leadership. Playing to Win makes abstract questions usable, while his operating experience shows that choices must survive capital allocation, capability building and execution. His work is central to OutcomesLab’s view that strategy is a coherent system of commitments rather than a list of priorities.
